Choosing a cream sofa will set the vibe of your living room. “Cream works beautifully in living rooms if you’re going for a clean, understated scheme, as it’s warmer than white, creating that cosy feel,” Claire says. “Cream is such a versatile shade. It’s sophisticated and elegant whilst feeling fresh.”
When deciding on the style of your sofa, ask yourself if you prefer a classic or contemporary style. A Chesterfield sofa is the best for classic living rooms with button-back details highlighting the soft cream upholstery. For contemporary sofas, it’s all about the silhouette – prioritise clean lines or smart curves for a stylish living room.
If you’re thinking of painting your living room walls cream, the tip is to get the undertone right. “Cream paint is a brilliant backdrop for a classic, timeless scheme as it’s neutral, so it can be layered with colour and texture to build depth and interest,” Claire says. “Cream is great for an elegant yet contemporary style living room if you’re adding pops of colour.”
She goes on to say, “A cream backdrop is the ideal blank canvas in a living room, which is why it can be paired with many different styles - whether classic or contemporary. It is particularly effective in north-facing rooms as the warm undertones keep the space feeling fresh whilst the lack of grey undertone prevents the space from feeling cold.” For south-facing rooms, choose a cream paint with a soft or light undertone to maximise the natural light. Go for cream paints with a bluish undertone for a crisp and refreshing feel.
We all know you can’t go wrong with a black and white colour scheme - and black and cream work perfectly too. Choose a cream shade with a warm undertone like yellow to create a warm contrast for the walls. A cream sofa with fabric upholstery will soften the room and make your space feel more inviting.
Contrast is the way to go here with in black accents. Introduce a black slat feature wall and black pattern cushions on your sofa. This will give your space a cool, edgy feel and stand out among the soft, cream textures.
Introducing earth tones to your cream living room is one way to perk up your space without straying away from the original theme. The tip is to pick a relaxing tone like sky blue or sage green if you’re considering a feature wall - this will be a refreshing contrast next to your cream sofa. “Add a mix of greens to a cream space, from sage green through to forest green - for energy and interest,” Claire advises. “Sage green and cream is a gorgeous combination, layered with washed oak furniture or flooring.”
Accessorising is a chic way to introduce bright pops of colour. Cushions or bold artwork are chic ways to bring in touches of red or orange, while yellow maybe another colour to consider as an accent. “Pair cream with earthy tones such as terracotta for an extra comforting feel,” Claire says. “Taupe also goes beautifully with cream for depth and warmth.” If you’re curious about earth tones, read our guide for more inspiration.
Cream is a light neutral which makes it incredibly versatile and easy to pair with other colours and tones. If you want to incorporate subtle tones to your living room a good tip is to pair cream with other neutrals for a more layered look.
Go for shades of beige like taupe or pick a warm grey and warm white tones. You can use these neutrals to set the vibe of your room - whether you want to lighten up or add moody touches. For example, a chic rug in light grey or beige will make the room feel warm and snug while black or dark grey accents will make the room feel more cool and contemporary.
Cream living rooms are great for luxe, contemporary style; however, when not done right will make it look and feel flat. Bringing in patterns through accessories, artwork or rugs will help add depth and dimension to your living room.
For example, introduce patterns to a cream sofa with cushions or throws to break up the monotony. You can also decorate around your sofa with a bold area rug which can be the focal point of your room. For those who want to switch things up, you can opt for patterned curtains, just make sure that the fabric you choose is light and airy so the room won’t feel dark.
Are you worried your cream living room feels too boring? Perking up your space with an accent drama will bring drama and contrast while still creating an elegant living room.
You can create a colour theme through bold accents like only using jewel tones, pastels or just bright pops of pink to your interior. Start small with just cushions and throws but if you want to go all out a bold armchair next to a cream sofa makes a really stylish statement. It’s also about the small details when it comes to including bold colour - perk up your shelves or coffee table with colourful vases or bowls to complete the look.
Since cream is a light, neutral colour, lighting plays a big role in creating the ambience of your living room. Keep your windows minimal or use sheer or light curtains to invite natural lighting inside.
When it comes to ambient lighting, choose light bulbs with an orange tinge. If you have cream walls, this will give your space more of a yellow glow and make it feel cosy and inviting. Choosing bulbs that are too white, will make your space feel stark and less relaxing, as it will feel too bright. A spotlight is a good solution if you want to read and also keep you in control of the room’s brightness.
Since cream is considered cosy why not pair it with another relaxing texture? Wood is ideal for this as you can mix and match different types of wood together. This is also great if your living room has exposed wooden beams or wooden flooring, as you can accentuate these features with a wooden coffee table or shelving.
Do you want to give the room a more moody feel? Dark wood wall panels or a chestnut coffee table will do the trick. If you want to keep it light and airy choose washed oak. “I’d say wood, particularly washed oak, adds contrast, depth, warmth and character to a cream living room,” Claire says.
An ideal décor style for neutral living rooms, country-style interiors create a lived-in, relaxed vibe. Make a Chesterfield sofa the centrepiece of the room and highlight its elegant button-back details. Match the sofa with other pieces like a fabric footstool or a stylish rug to create a soft and inviting ambience. Bring in wooden accents or furniture to complete the look and highlight the rustic feel of this decor style. For more tips on how to style a country living room, check out our guide.
Besides black, cream and grey are another cool colour combination and a discreet way to create contrast in your living room. Cream’s warm and cosy elements balance grey’s coolness creating a simple but elegant space.
Use cream as the base colour of the room and decorate around it with grey. This could be a cream sofa with a grey feature wall or vice versa with cream walls and a light grey sofa. If you want to add darker accents into the mix introduce black accessories for an edgy, contemporary feel. For more tips on what colours go with a grey sofa, read our guide.
For those who want to incorporate some sparkle into their cream living room, you can do so through metallic textures. An easy way to do this is through lighting fixtures. Depending on your décor style, a gold pendant light or a gold chandelier may be what you need to perk up your space.
Other than that, you can also bring in metallics in other ways. Mirrors with gold or silver frames will brighten up the room while a glass coffee or side table with metallic edges also enhances the space. If you’re unsure of whether to use gold or silver (we recommend both!), just remember that gold warms up the room while silver like grey will cool it down.
Even though they are similar, cream and white can be used to decorate a living room together. Use cream to warm up white walls in a living room with a cream sofa, rug or armchair for an elegant, layered look.
Texture plays a key role here in preventing this look from feeling one-dimensional. Mix and match with contrasting textures like a wool throw against a leather sofa or a cream rug against wooden flooring. If you’re thinking of breaking up the neutrals, bring in small doses of colour through accessories or greenery.
Who says cream living rooms are boring? With modern boho style, your cream living room is an invitation to be cool and contemporary with a side of eclectic.
Ground the room with a cream sofa and then start mixing and matching. Moroccan-inspired prints and textiles are a great way to highlight the modern boho feel. Round off the look with lots of natural textures like wood, ceramics and rattan for a carefree boho interior. Want to know more about modern boho style? Besides colour and texture, introducing natural greenery is an easy way to liven up a cream living room. Make a statement with large tropical-style plants like monsteras or palms near your sofa or windows for that dose of sunlight.
You can also decorate with trailing plants or hanging plants if you have lots of shelving in your living room alongside your books or ornaments. A fresh bouquet of flowers will also be a cheery addition to your living room and brighten up your space.
Cream is a versatile and timeless colour that pairs well with all types of colours. The key thing is to decide what type of mood or theme you want to set for your living room. If you want to keep it simple and relaxing, pair cream with other neutrals like beige, light brown, white and grey. Earth tones like sky blue, sage green perk up the space while still keeping it cosy. Metallics like gold and silver add sparkle while pastels like pink add a refreshing touch.
Metallic textures like gold or silver will brighten up a cream living room. If you want to incorporate more colour, you can paint a feature wall in a relaxing tone like sage green or terracotta.
Mix and match with textures to prevent the space from feeling flat. Contrast soft fabrics with textures like leather, rattan or jute. Accessorise with a mixture of ceramics and glassware to break up the cream base. Go for bold prints or patterns when choosing cushions or throws for your sofa.
Yes, cream and grey go well together in a living room. Use cream’s warm elements to soften grey decor like a cream sofa against grey walls or grey sofa with cream walls.
