In the world of fast-moving trends, curves reign supreme. Curves are now a mainstay in home interiors as they break up the harsh lines and invite softness. Curved furniture creates an inviting space and helps us to feel calmer too. A chic, curved sofa instantly makes a space feel luxurious and professionally styled.
“Choosing a curved sofa has become easier since the trend started with curves now being incorporated into every style of sofa you can imagine,” Amthal says. “Furniture companies are becoming more innovative in sofa design and combining traditional sofa elements with curves and waves to create new designs. A cocoon-shaped sofa allows you to lounge, relax and chat more easily than a traditional sofa design.”
Cosy and relaxing upholstery is an important thing to consider when choosing a sofa - and always on trend! One such fabric that’s continued to stand out is bouclé (the French word for ‘curled’) thanks to its luxe texture and understated elegance. Bouclé’s timeless appeal has made it a favourite with designers who want to add warmth and sophistication to the living room.
Bouclé’s rise also goes hand in hand with the curved interior trend. “Textured fabric enhances curved shapes which is why bouclé upholstery works particularly well for this look,” Amthal says. “The soft curves combined with the elegant texture will immediately put anyone at ease and create a contemporary living room that’s not just stylish but also inviting.”
The popularity of curved shapes and cosy upholstery, has also caused a shift in sofa colour palettes. “Interior design is moving away from cold whites and cool greys and is gravitating towards subtle, cosier tones of ivory, stone or dove which add softness and depth,” Amthal says. “There has been an obvious shift from grey sofas to lighter-coloured seating that makes a space feel cosy and immediately more relaxing.”
Besides the lighter tones, relaxing earth tones also fall into the warm neutrals category. Shades of brown like camel, beige, mocha and espresso are great picks for sofas as they ground the room and make the space feel like a cosy cocoon. A brown sofa will easily complement any other natural textures in the room such as wooden flooring or a jute rug. For more inspiration, read our guide on neutral living rooms.
What comes to mind when you think of retro interiors? Their clean lines and classic silhouettes are two elements that stand out - especially when it comes to sofas.
Take a cue from mid-century modern style by choosing a sofa with clean lines and a slim profile with sleek, tapered legs. “A mid-century style sofa for 2025 is a timeless and chic pick for the living room,” Amthal says. “Its stylish silhouette will help make the space look bigger and feel more spacious. We’re seeing lots of sofas with mid-century-inspired designs that have been updated with the latest trending fabrics and materials. Think mixed-weave fabrics like chenille, chambray and plush fabrics which are very chic but also durable.”
With home cinemas becoming popular again, customers are looking for the perfect sofas and chairs to re-create the cinema experience in their own homes. Amthal comments, “Recliner sofas are a furniture classic but are fast being re-invented in modern and exciting ways — whether it’s a sleek, leather recliner with space for snacks and drinks, or a plush corner model with a roomy chaise so that everyone can put their feet up.”
“We’re noticing new materials, colour and features coming into play such as plush fabrics and even velvet and chenille adding a contemporary touch to this sofa style,” Amthal says. “The trend for recliners is also moving away from neutral greys and browns and moving into bright, fashionable colours. What’s more, tech additions have become popular such as USB charging ports or space for your mobile phone.”
With homes getting smaller, there is an obvious need for multifunctional furniture especially in communal spaces like the living room. There are now plenty of sofas designed to accommodate all these practicalities whether it’s for a home cinema or extra seating.
“The L-shaped and corner sofas we’re used to seeing have gone super-size and the seats are deeper to accommodate this new style of lounging,” Amthal says. “Fibre-filled Oxford pillows have replaced standard sofa cushions for a softer, cosier sit. Recliners are trending in velvets and soft fabrics making them not just a practical buy, but also a chic fit.”
The dopamine décor trend which is all over TikTok is about surrounding yourself with vivid colours and patterns. This trend is about making you happy and decorating with what brings you joy while not taking yourself too seriously. Unsurprisingly, it’s influenced sofa colour trends as there are more bold colours to choose from.
“If you’re bored of neutrals this is the trend to jump on,“ Amthal says. “There are now lots of deep greens, playful pinks and cheerful yellow sofas for anyone who wants to shake things up. These bold colours go well with luxe textures like velvet or plush fabric giving the upholstery a nice sheen and making it look more inviting.”
Quiet luxury has been on the radar for a while now as more people gravitate towards all things classic and a desire for better quality products. Sofa upholstery is an interior design area where luxe plays an important role. What’s not to love about sofas that are durable, well-crafted and aesthetically pleasing?
“We’re noticing the introduction of mixed materials and a strong desire to take familiar fabrics to a new level,” Amthal says. “Standard linens and plain velvets are being elevated with shimmer-effect, two-tone weaves and distressed finishes. Fabrics such as chenille might have been considered a thing of the past but suddenly it’s avant-garde because it’s durable and resistant to pilling.”
Curved sofas are here to stay as they break up the sharp lines and make the room feel more inviting. Modular sofas are also popular right now as they can be configured to maximise seating and can double as storage space.
Grey and beige are timeless colour picks for sofas. If you want to play it safe, neutrals are always a classic and can be dressed up with colourful accessories no matter what style you go for.
No, grey sofas are a timeless choice for the living room. Cool grey tones aren’t as popular right now but that doesn’t mean grey as a colour is out of fashion. If you’re thinking of a grey sofa choose a warmer (or darker) grey tone.
Take into consideration your lifestyle, personal taste and living room layout. The sofa you choose should accommodate your needs and fit into your room design. When it comes to the sofa style, a good starting point would be to decide whether you prefer classic or contemporary sofas.
Relaxing earth tones like beige, camel and espresso are trending now but also make timeless picks. However if you’re bored of neutrals, deep greens, playful pinks and cheerful yellow sofas are for anyone who wants to shake things up.
